Pat Preston, and Jackie Preston Franck, of Preston Superstore in Burton present a $2500 check to Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland for the Sheriff’s K-9 fund. Mary and John Wheeler (pictured) of Wheeler Landscaping in Auburn Township began the project last summer to raise money to enable the Sheriff’s Office to purchase and train three new police dogs for their K-9 unit. For several months, every time a customer test-drove a Chevy Volt, Preston Superstore donated $25 to the Sheriff’s K-9 fund, culminating in the presentation of $2500 check on Jan. 11. The check from Preston Superstore brings the total funds raised to the $24,000 goal necessary for the three new dogs. The six-week training program for the new dogs is expected to begin in April, followed by a community event hosted by the Wheelers to thank all the individuals, businesses and groups that donated to the cause and to introduce the new dogs.
The new dogs will join the two already in the Sheriff’s K-9 unit: Marko, a male German Shepherd trained in explosives detection and patrol, and Midge, a rat terrier/Chihuahua mix certified by the Guinness World’s Records as the world's smallest police dog, who specializes in locating narcotics.
